This course will introduce you to the field of Sociolinguistics, the study of language as a socially-situated phenomenon. Through textbook reading, sharing core sociolinguistic studies, in-class workshops, and individual projects, you will encounter the field as it is today, and learn how to contribute to our shared linguistic knowledge now and in the future. At the end of this course, you will be able to: 1) Describe the trajectory of the history of sociolinguistics and the major developments in the field 2) Use the methodology of sociolinguistics, both quantitative and qualitative, to analyze novel data 3) Conduct your own small-scale sociolinguistic projects independently. Most importantly, you will gain an appreciation for what it is to be a user of language, and understand yourself and others around you in new and useful ways.
