The
students of the English Study Program take this course in order to gain an in-depth
understanding of the series of approaches and methods in language teaching.
They are based on the historical perspectives of the ones used in current
situations. In this course, the students first learn various approaches
including Grammar Translation Method; Direct Method; Reading Method; Audio
Lingual Method; Cognitive Learning Theories; Communicative Language Teaching;
Community Language Learning; Silent Way; Suggestopedia; Natural Approach; and
total Physical Response. In addition, the students also learn the methods used
for teaching language skills namely: listening, speaking, reading, writing, and
the numbers of language components. The study is through description and discussion
as the classroom activities. By having such activities, it is hoped that the
students are informed about background, principles, and usual classroom
techniques of language teaching methods. Then, after the students are
knowledgeable about the methods, they are trained to apply the methods in their
classroom for practice. This is done through classroom simulation. Therefore,
it is expected that they can better arrive at their judgments and decisions for
appropriate teaching methods in language classroom of a specific context
